In life, one has to keep asking many questions about the decisions they make.
Why? Because we make decisions today for the future – that future can be one minute away, an hour away, or even several years to come.
Remember, that PhD decision is major.
Apart from asking very many questions, personal questions are a priority – it is you who will travel the PhD journey.
The following are some of those personal questions you may need to ask yourself – remember you have the answers…
1. Why do I really want to pursue a PhD?
The answer to this question goes beyond “because it is a good idea.” You need to ask whether you are doing it for genuine intellectual curiosity, a desire to contribute to knowledge, a specific career goal, or a combination of these reasons.
2. Am I prepared for the emotional and psychological demands of a PhD?
The PhD journey can be isolating and challenging – it is lonely. You need to ask yourself whether you are resilient, self-motivated, and able to handle setbacks and frustrations without breaking down.
3. Can I handle the financial and time commitment required for the PhD?
PhD programs require significant time and financial investment. Ask yourself whether you are prepared for the financial implications (tuition fees, living expenses, etc.) and the potential for lower income during the period of your studies.
4. What are my realistic career goals after completing a PhD?
Before starting on your PhD journey, ask yourself whether you have explored other potential career paths. Also, ask yourself whether you are currently prepared for the competitive job market in academia and other fields and whether this will change in the future.
5. Do I have a strong support system?
The PhD journey can be demanding, and you need support. Before embarking on the PhD journey, you need to figure out whether you have a supportive network of family, friends, and mentors to help you through the challenges. Many students have failed because of lack of this support.
6. What are my alternatives apart from pursuing a PhD for my career?
Many people pursue PhD for career purposes. lt is important to ask yourself whether you have explored other career paths that better align with your interests and goals. You also need to list down and understand the potential benefits and drawbacks of pursuing a PhD compared to those other alternatives.
7. Am I truly passionate about this specific field of my PhD research?
Your research topic will likely be the focus of your work for several years. It is important to ensure that you are deeply passionate about your chosen field and that your research interests are genuine and enduring.
These are not the only personal questions you need to ask yourself- there are many others.
By honestly answering these personal questions, you can gain a deeper understanding of your motivations and determine if pursuing a PhD is the right path for you.
